Formed in 2000 by singer Carol C and programmer/DJ U.F.LOW, Si*Sé bring together the atmospheric vibes of electronica with the crackle of live instruments. The results are electric: "It's about mixing stuff up that's not usually mixed together," says Carol C. "We're a band from New York City and we try and combine all of its musical traditions including hip-hop beats, Latin rhythms and down-tempo electronic music because that's what we hear everyday of our lives. It's a prelude to the future." Their music is a romantic stroll through the global barrio. Singing in both Spanish and English, stunning vocalist Carol C (whose family hails from the Dominican Republic) is at once sexy, smooth, soulful and completely unique. Programmer/producer/keyboardist Cliff Cristofaro aka U.F.LOW is a b-boy minimalist armed with a single MPC drum machine. But theirs is more than a beauty and beats story: Two viola players (Jeannie Oliver and Olivia Martinez), crack percussionist Neil Ochoa, spirited bassist Morgan Phillips, and live drummer Ryan Farley add an eclectic live punch to songs that range from deep drum 'n' bass to futuristic Latin ritmos and beyond.

Her music is a mixture of traditional and contemporary. Her backing band features indigenous Peruvian instruments such as the cajón ("wooden box", whose origins lie in an upturned fruit crate), guapeo (clay pot), and quijada (jawbone of a burro), as well as acoustic guitar and double bass. Although many of her songs are based on traditional forms such as the lando or vals, she also incorporates elements of Cuban and Brazilian music. Her songs are poetic (with lyrics composed by some of Latin America's premier poets, with whom she collaborates), rich with evocative imagery, and her voice is delicate yet soulful. In 2002, Baca won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Folk Album, for her "Lamento Negro" CD. Despite the peacefulness of her music, it is influenced by a history of political activism that is rooted in her personal development as a woman and the awareness of societal oppression in Peru and around the world.

Her latest recording, "Travesias" was recorded with a diverse group of music collaborators like Gilberto Gil, Marc Ribot and produced by Craig Street (of Cassandra Wilson and Norah Jones fame). The CD contains a variety of songs from various parts of the world including France (Maxime Le Forestier's Né Quelque Part), the United Kingdom (Damien Rice's Volcano), Haiti, Brazil, and Peru.

Windows to the guts of the soul

Sylvia Bofill's new play, Windows, centers around three women - mother, daughter, and grandaughter- seamlessly jumping around in time (past and present tenses are disjointed), memories (dreams and unfulfilled goals abound), and tone (funny, touching, morbid). The women reminisce about Puerto Rico and even get nostalgic about the island, but never in an overtly exaggerated way: this is not a "Latino" play or a play about Puerto Rican identity. The characters happen to be Puerto Rican, and hints of Puerto Rican history and its nostalgia serves as an analogy between mother-daughter bonds and its burdens. The acting is superb, especially Mercedes Herrero as Camila, a middle-aged widowed journalist who lives with regret and with the (self-created?)torment of her repressive mother Angelina (Carmen de Lavallade) and her detached daughter (Milena Pérez Joglar).

Bofill, a Puerto Rican playwright and director in her early thirties who graduated from Columbia's MFA program, is ingeniously creative when directing: for much of the play, Camila's bed becomes the center piece of the stage, alternating between almost a floating ship where characters and lovers interact or a haven or escape zone where an angst-ridden Camila sleeps and sleeps refusing to wake up. If I have failed to describe the plot of Windows is because its just eso: about relationships, about families, about contemplating life and maybe doing something about it.
Muy recomendable, very enjoyable.

Named "Best Spanish Artist" by MTV Europe, Macaco will be presenting their new album Ingravitto in a rare NYC performance at SOB's on Sunday, October 29th. "The Album builds on a base of rumba Catalana with staccato rapping, singing, jungle beats, scratching, rock, reggae and pop, adding blasts of African-Brazilian percussion, and its 14 tracks are sung in Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, and English."

Sound a bit like another artist that begins with M? Yesss, fans of Manu Chao will definitely dig Macaco. We have yet to see them live (and can't wait!!!!), but have heard that the show is amaaaaazing.

?Qué hace la Mujer Maravilla, Cat Woman o Batman en su tiempo libre, cuando no están actuando en películas o haciendo acto de presencia en covenciones de comic book freaks? Pues trabajar, como el resto de los mortales. Para los que se perdieron la exhibición en el Queens Museum of Art, los super héroes aún están salvando vidas por Nueva York, y en la Y Gallery en Jackson Heights los puedes apreciar del 19 de octubre al 12 de noviembre en una nueva exhibición curada por Cecilia Jurado.
La fotógrafa mexicana Dulce Pinzón ya ha llamado la atención de medios como The New York Times, y es que su último trabajo, "The Real Story of the Superheroes", tiene que ser visto. Son 15 fotografías de héroes populares, de personajes Anglos y Latinoamericanos desde el Chapulín, hasta Wonder Woman y Blue Demon, realizando hazañas increíbles como trabajo en construcción, abriendo la puerta de un taxi, cuidando niños en un apartamento del Upper East Side, cocinando en un trendy restaurante de Williamsburg. Lo más fascinante de la obra de Pinzón es como cada fotografía está cuidadosamente compuesta y como ha logrado capturar al inmigrante en acción, en su trabajo de día a día, a la vez dejándonos ver las repercusiones sociales, económicas, que tienen en la vida de Nueva York y en la de sus familias allá en México. Reconocerás a los super héroes y como immigrante, desplazado, o simplemente solidario, te verás retratado en ellos.

The panel will address pivotal issues that inform the Tropicália exhibition including the clash between the progressive agenda set forth in the 1950s by Brazilian president Kubitscheck, the repressive period initiated by the 1964 military coup, the search for an inclusive Pan-American aesthetics, and the Tropicalists’ embracing of the idea of “antropofagia" (cultural cannibalism) as proposed by poet Oswald de Andrade's 1928 manifesto. Dunn, author of Brutality Garden—the most thorough assessment of the era published in the US—will discuss characteristics that distinguish the period from previous eras. Basualdo will present an overview of Tropicália. Brazilian art historian Calirman and composer Lindsay, who lived in Brazil during the Tropicália period, will join the discussion and discuss the influence of the Tropicália movement in their formative years.

Jim Gilchrist, founder of the Minuteman Project, has been invited by the Columbia University College Republicans to speak Wednesday, October 4, about the so-called "threat posed by illegal immigration." In response, several student organizations, along with social justice organizations around the city, have called for an emergency protest. The Minutemen are not simply another side of the immigration debate - they are a far-right, racist vigilante group that terrorizes the immigrant community. To counter the anti-immigrant bigotry of the event, protesters -- who will be dressed in white -- will advance the slogan, "Full rights for all immigrants!"
